David Babor originally from Czech Republic, moved to Kenmare almost 15 years ago. A love of the culinary world ran alongside his love for coffee. Alexa’s home town is Kenmare, after studying in college and some time spent travelling and working throughout Ireland has been settled in Kenmare for the past 6 years. Alexa and David now live in their home they built together on the Beara peninsula with their 5 year old son

What inspired you to start Babors Beans Coffee Roasters?
We wanted to work together and build a sustainable business for our future. With ideas and experience we had both gained personally over the years we put our heads together and the idea for Babors Beans was born. We wanted to create an honest and enjoyable experience for our customers. So we keep our coffee fresh and ethically sourced.

Did you train professionally, did it direct you into a particular area?
David trained as a chef and was a teacher in a culinary school in Czech for some time. He also had experience working in a coffee roastery in Czech. Once we decided to open our business he trained with several coffee academies to gain more knowledge and experience in this area.

You are situation in the beautiful, picturesque town of Kenmare, how is your work influenced by your surroundings?
We are blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Especially where we have our home and roastery we have fantastic views of the sea and the mountains. It is inspiring to see this on a daily basis and makes us feel grateful for what we have.

Has the current pandemic impacted your work and business?
Yes the pandemic has impacted our business. But we are fortunate to have some fantastic customers who we still ship coffee to and have helped to keep our business afloat. Our new online shop also has been a key factor for us since the pandemic. As we are mainly wholesale supply to restaurants and cafes we are looking forward to the reopening of businesses.

What are your plans for the future?
We had recently started to extended our roastery to include a small workshop so we can offer tours of our roastery and give classes. We hope in 2021 we will be able to finish the workshop and run some courses for the public.
